The Maha Mrityunjay Temple, nestled in the serene town of Nagaon, Assam, stands as a testament to devotion and architectural brilliance. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is not just an ordinary place of worshipโitโs a divine marvel that draws devotees from far and wide.
Architectural Uniqueness
What sets the Maha Mrityunjay Temple apart is its unique form: it is built in the shape of a Shivling. Rising to an impressive height of 126 feet, it holds the distinction of being the worldโs largest Shivalinga. The sheer grandeur of this sacred structure leaves visitors awe-struck.
Historical Significance
The templeโs construction began in 2003, initiated by Acharya Bhrigu Giri Maharaj. Legend has it that this very spot was where Guru Shukracharya performed the Mahฤmrityunjaya Mantra, infusing it with spiritual energy. Thus, Acharya Bhrigu Giri Maharaj chose this location for the templeโs construction (Pran Pratishta).
Engineering Mastery
The Maha Mrityunjay Temple isnโt just a spiritual haven; itโs also a testament to engineering excellence. After several attempts by various architects and engineers, the final design and engineering work were carried out by Er. Narayan Sharma. The templeโs flawless execution reflects true mastery in engineering.
Inauguration and Pran Pratishta Mahotsav
The templeโs inauguration took place during the Pran Pratishta Mahotsav. From February 22 to 25, 2021, the temple witnessed sacred rituals and worship. Dignitaries like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Ex. Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal graced the occasion. 108 Yagna Kundas were established for the Yagna, with around 250 priests from Tamil Nadu participating in the Pran Pratishta Yagna. After the completion of the Yagna, the temple opened its doors to devotees on February 26, 2021.
Location
The Maha Mrityunjay Temple is situated in Mahapurush Srimanta Damodar Path, Kalajugi, Puranigudam, Bardua area, approximately 120 km from the heart city of Assam, Guwahati. Devotees can hire a taxi from Nagaon town or use local tempo services to reach this sacred abode.
Resilience
In April 2021, a massive earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Assam and the Northeast region. Although the temple experienced minor ornamental damageโa crack in the upper part of the 126-foot structureโits structural integrity remained intact.
The Maha Mrityunjay Temple stands as a beacon of faith, drawing pilgrims and seekers alike. Its colossal Shivlinga symbolizes Lord Shivaโs eternal presence, and its architectural splendor continues to inspire reverence.
